Vintage shopping in Karlsruhe
The city's most beautiful second-hand stores, antique shops and social stores
Welcome to the world of pomp and splendour in the Prinz-Max-Palais in our beautiful Karlsruhe. Although it appears regal, the building at Karlstrasse 10 was originally intended for a commoner. In 1882, the big businessman August Schmieder had Josef Durm build him a splendid retirement home in the Italian palace style. With its lavish figurative decoration and precious marble panels, the palace in Karlsruhe has always fascinated and attracted people.
In 1899, on his marriage to Maria von Cumberland, Prince Max von Baden acquired the palace in Karlsruhe as a family residence, whereupon it was named after him. In 1918, after the end of the monarchy, the last chancellor of the empire left the building. It was subsequently used by various organisations and companies. In 1978, Karlsruhe City Council approved its conversion into a cultural centre, which opened in 1981.
Today, the building is home to the City Museum, the Museum of Literature on the Upper Rhine, the Literary Society and the Children's and Youth Library. We send you on this unique historical journey not only for nostalgic and patriotic reasons. In addition to various changing exhibitions, a particularly clever one has opened its doors. "What am I?" can be visited all year round in 2024 and is guaranteed to be free of charge. And believe us, it's worth it.
The curators have taken a look into their depots and selected some quirky treasures from the collections of the Karlsruhe City Museum for you. Of course, the presentations do not immediately give you an idea of the function of the objects on display. It's up to you to find out! Track down the unusual objects and join in the guessing. Quiz yourself from display case to display case.
Extra tip: The city museum has a model of the city of Karlsruhe from around 1834. It is equipped with a computer animation in which 30 stations are explained in words and pictures.
